A Pedophile is More Dangerous than a Pervert

The distorted St. Pete Times article about Hank Asher and the technology his new company TLO has created to find child pornographers has caused quite a stir.  I noticed some people and even this blog about crime are using the word "pervert" and "pedophile" interchangeably.

I want to make a distinction between a "pervert" and a "pedophile" not because pedophiles aren't "perverts" but because the word "pervert" does not engender the dangerous nature of a pedophile.

Pedophiles are sexual predators - they stalk, hunt and hurt children. Sometimes they murder children.

TLO software helps find people who trade child pornography. I call those people "pedophiles" and "sexual predators" not simply perverts. Why? Because trading child pornography is NOT a victimless crime.

Why All the Privacy Hoopblah?
It is true that the owner of the company, Hank Asher donates work space and his company's technology to law enforcement so law enforcement can catch pedophiles and child pornographers.  But I seriously doubt, as has been suggested, Hank Asher does so to gain access to "confidential data."

Hank Asher has a very long history of working with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and a long history of contributing financially and donating his technology to same. It appears he is guilty of philanthropy and nothing as sinister as intruding "into the lives of millions of Americans."

Insinuating he has some dark ulterior motive for giving away his money, work space and technology shifts the focus away from fighting crime and catching child sexual predators.

Now THAT is a perversion.
